SafeBirth4All - Preventing Obstetric Fistula

Obstetric fistula is one of the most neglected public-health and human-rights realities for women and girls in the global south. The condition deeply affects a woman’s life, causing devastating, life-altering damage to her body, resulting in shame, discrimination and social rejection, deepening poverty and marginalisation and psycho-social trauma.

Through the SafeBirth4All campaign, Misean Cara joins the Medical Missionaries of Mary and the Association of Leaders of Missionaries & Religious of Ireland (AMRI) in an awareness building initiative to help prevent and eradicate obstetric fistula in the developing world.

Worldwide as many as two million women and girls are living with obstetric fistula, with 50,000 - 100,000 new cases occurring each year.

Obstetric Fistula

Obstetric fistula is a physical injury that occurs during a prolonged birth, where the baby becomes stuck inside a woman’s body. The injury is a hole between the birth canal and the bladder or rectum, resulting in uncontrollable leaking of urine and/or faeces. Left untreated, this is the reality for a woman or girl for the rest of her life. Added to this trauma, is the reality that 90% of pregnancies where the woman develops fistula, results in stillbirth.

While obstetric fistula has been virtually eradicated in the developed world, millions of women and young girls in the developing world are living in poverty as outcasts from their society, rejected by their husband, family and community because they are suffering from the devastating consequences of obstetric fistula. The baby they were expecting will often have died unborn.

Obstetric fistula is a wholly preventable condition, provided that appropriate medical and obstetric facilities including emergency caesarean section are available. The continuing problem of obstetric fistula is a clear sign that the world is failing in its duty to meet the needs of women in developing countries. Its eradication in the developing world needs to be given global priority.

The SafeBirth4All campaign promotes the prevention of obstetric fistula, while also aligning with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) Campaign for treatment, rehabilitation, reintegration and advocacy.

The campaign was launched in Ireland in May 2024 as a coalition of organisations made up of Misean Cara, Medical Missionaries of Mary, Association of Leaders of Missionaries & Religious of Ireland, and Geneva for Human Rights, and under the leadership of Fr. Edward Flynn CSSp; Sr. Ursula Sharpe, Congregational leader of the MMMs; Toni Pyke, PhD with AMRI, and Misean Cara CEO, John Moffett.

Stories from Survivors of Obstetric Fistula

In a powerful video directed and produced by Dearbhla Glynn and Patrick Daly for Yoke Productions, hear the stories of two women in Uganda who have lived with obstetric fistula, one for some 50 years. Their stories vividly highlight the devastating impact that obstetric fistula has on all aspects of a woman's life, but also the hope and renewal that can come with treatment.
