Fr Tim Galvin (1952-2023) of the Saint Patrick’s Missionary Society, leaves behind legacy of nearly four decades of dedicated missionary service in South Sudan

Misean Cara was saddened to learn of the death of Fr Tim Galvin, a Kiltegan Father with the Saint Patrick’s Missionary Society, who passed away suddenly in Nairobi, Kenya on the 9th of February, 2023.

Fr Tim, who had been a missionary in South Sudan for nearly 40 years, was passionate in his work to ensure access to quality education for children and young people in remote, underprivileged areas of the country. Misean Cara was a co-funder of projects run by Fr Tim, including the St Mary Magdalen School in Riwoto, South Sudan, where Misean Cara funds supported teacher training programmes and the construction of new classrooms.

Fr Tim’s funeral mass and burial will take place in Nakuru, Kenya, on February 23rd, 2023. The funeral mass for Fr. Tim will be live-streamed from Nakuru, Kenya on 23rd February from 7:45 am (Irish time). A recording of the funeral mass and service can be watched here.

In 2021, Fr Tim was the recipient of a Misean Cara Climate Action Award. Following the publication of Pope Francis’s encyclical Laudato Si’ in 2015, calling for action to protect and preserve our common home, Fr Tim had trained to become a Laudato Si’ Animator. This training enhanced his ability to lead climate action projects and inspire care of the environment amongst others. In Riwoto, South Sudan, Fr Tim worked with his parish community to mitigate the effects of climate change by planting trees for shade, erosion control and carbon emissions reduction and by setting up the St Mary Magdalen garden at the parish primary school in order to provide vegetables for the school community while encouraging native pollinators and biodiversity.

Fr Tim’s contributions and impact as a missionary will be felt for decades by the people and communities he served and will long be an inspiration to all who knew of those work.
